What they are doing is to manage the flow of the exhaust gases as well as the flow of the air round (and through) the body, especially at the rear. With a turbo-diesel, there is just not enough output flow to make a whole lot of a difference, but independently, they have taken a conscious decision to produce more power at the expense of fuel consumption.

@Robin Cohen: the fuel tanks are anyway ballasted, to bring them down to the regulation size, so no last-minute design change is necessary, just a removal of ballast.

@Jan Peeters: The track surface at Spa is very unlike the track surface at Le Mans, so I think Toyota will have no difficulty double-stinting its tyres at Le Mans.

Finally, if it is dry, and we have no safety cars, then 400 laps is attainable. Astonishing, when you consider how much less power the cars have than in 2010 (when the distance record was set).Paul Truswellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17160575296019945600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8101784122100352616.post-2195284820376147432013-06-08T11:10:50.680+01:002013-06-08T11:10:50.680+01:00Fascinating insight as ever, that raises some addi...Fascinating insight as ever, that raises some additional questions though.

Is Toyota really capable of doublestinting the tyres? At Spa became clear that the 2013 version simply ate its tyres and a single stint was the maximum.

The Langheck Audi equally didn't perform better, so I don't think that quadruple stints are possible there, certainly not in the view of the augmented diesel usage.

The LM-versions of both manufacturers were on average 0,2 seconds per lap apart at Spa; slight advantage for Audi. If You foresee a mandatory quicker pace for Audi of 0,75 seconds per lap at LM, the performance gap there has to be even bigger compared to Spa; possible?

Bottom line. I agree with Nick Holland: sandbagging is over (have we seen the real potential of the Toyota already?). I also agree with You: perfection is unattainable and simulations do not compare real conditions. Bring on the race!

Jan Peeters @francorjeannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8101784122100352616.post-69671053070736725942013-06-08T08:22:28.349+01:002013-06-08T08:22:28.349+01:00Thanks for this article. The interesting part is ...Thanks for this article. The interesting part is that it may allow another lap for Toyota, or it may just low them the tion of carrying more fuel but not quite enough for a lap! Where you have an increase for the non hybrids, the chances of allowing both cars an additional lap are slim, more likely one will benefit more than another. I also wonder what ten wider implications are, do new tanks and bodywork mods need to be expedited quickly? Assuming the cars never had a spare 3 litres of capacity, they need to be stretched and room found for them. robandkathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12013381063438449889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8101784122100352616.post-90289087030314281062013-06-07T21:49:48.344+01:002013-06-07T21:49:48.344+01:00As ever a thought provoking post Paul, but I wonde...As ever a thought provoking post Paul, but I wonder if there is something else at play here that we have not encountered before... The blowing of a diffuser as I understand it requires maximising of the exhaust gases for best effect. This may have led Audi to a re-mapping and the thirstier engine but clearly their added pace outweighs that cost. This has allowed them at both Silverstone and Spa to not only close the gap, but comprehensively beat the Toyota times. Audi are the first to employ these diffusers in Endurance racing, and I expect their simulator has demonstrated the benefits. Whilst on shorter tracks even as quick as Silverstone and Spa they can add that air-induced advantage. However Le Mans even with the broken-up Hundaudieries is all about straight-line. I have no evidence but will not be surprised to see re-mapped Audis generating less blown downforce, but regaining much of their 2012 economy. I suspect that is also Toyota's fear.. the sandbagging is almost over ;-)Nick Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00849426152352362204noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8101784122100352616.post-70907196193290813192013-06-05T20:23:51.714+01:002013-06-05T20:23:51.714+01:00Great article, it will be a fantastic race either ...Great article, it will be a fantastic race either way, do you have any interest in doing similar comparison for GTE Pro? or does the Ferrari fuel tank size reduction make this impossible - at least until after test day? That is if we can believe what we see at test day since I am guessing their will be lots of bags of sand in play.

Once again great article

Daniel ODonnellDaniel ODonnellhttp://danouk.zenfolio.com/noreply@blogger.com
